The whale sharks of Saleh Bay don’t come to you — the boats leave Labuan Jambu harbour before dawn, and the bagan platforms where the sharks feed sit about two hours into the bay. So the real planning question isn’t “where are they?” but “which door do I enter through?” There are four, and they suit very different itineraries.
We’re the local operator running these trips for eight-plus years; here’s the routing advice we give our own guests, written down.
The Geography in 30 Seconds
Saleh Bay is the largest bay on Sumbawa. The gateway village is Labuan Jambu, about a 3-hour drive from Sumbawa Besar and its airport. From the harbour it’s roughly 2 more hours by boat to the bagan area — and since whale sharks feed when fishermen lift their nets around 6:00 AM, every route below ends with a very early alarm.
Route 1: Fly into Sumbawa Besar (SWQ) — Fastest
Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin III Airport in Sumbawa Besar has domestic connections from Lombok, Bali, and Surabaya. Arrive the day before, sleep in town, and we pick you up from your hotel around 2:00 AM. This is the shortest, freshest way to the sharks: the 1-day tour from Sumbawa Besar, or the speed boat version if you want more time back in your day.
Route 2: From Lombok by Ferry
Already in Lombok, or combining both islands? Take the ferry from Kayangan Port in East Lombok to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa — about a 2-hour crossing — then it’s roughly 5 hours by road to Labuan Jambu via Sumbawa Besar. That’s too much to squeeze around a 6:00 AM appointment with a shark, which is exactly why the 2D1N package from Lombok and the Poto Tano start exist: you travel one day, swim the next morning, and never rush.
Route 3: From Bali, Jakarta, or Abroad
Most international travellers land in Bali (DPS) or Lombok (LOP) first. From Bali the easiest combinations are a Bali→Lombok flight plus the ferry crossing, or a connecting flight Bali→Sumbawa Besar via Lombok. Tell us your starting point and dates and we’ll help you plan the connection — it’s part of the service, not an upsell.
Route 4: Already Near the Bay? Join at Labuan Jambu
If you’re exploring Sumbawa on your own wheels, the cheapest door is the harbour itself: the shared open trip meets at Labuan Jambu around 3:30–4:00 AM at IDR 650,000 per person, and there’s a private tour from the village too. Coming from the southwest coast instead? There’s a dedicated start from Sekongkang.
Which Door Should You Use?
| Starting point | The journey | Best pick |
|---|---|---|
| Sumbawa Besar / SWQ flight | Hotel pickup ±2:00 AM, ±3 h drive to the harbour | 1-day tour or speed boat day tour |
| Lombok / Bali via ferry | Kayangan → Poto Tano ferry (±2 h) + ±5 h road | 2D1N from Lombok or start at Poto Tano |
| Solo traveler from Lombok | All transfers bundled | open trip with Lombok transfers |
| Already near the bay | Meet at Labuan Jambu ±3:30 AM | shared open trip (IDR 650,000/person) or private from the village |
Getting Around Sumbawa
Beyond the tour itself, distances on Sumbawa are long and public transport is thin. A car with a driver is the sane option for airport runs and onward travel — see our Sumbawa car rental & transport service. And before you lock dates, it’s worth a glance at the season guide — the month you choose matters more than the route.
FAQ: Getting to Saleh Bay
How far is Saleh Bay from Sumbawa Besar?
About a 3-hour drive from Sumbawa Besar (or the SWQ airport) to Labuan Jambu harbour, then roughly 2 hours by boat to the bagan area where the whale sharks feed — which is why pickups start around 2:00 AM.
Can I see the whale sharks as a day trip from Lombok?
We don’t recommend compressing it: the ferry takes about 2 hours and the road another 5 each way. The 2D1N packages from Lombok or Poto Tano exist precisely so you don’t have to squeeze the whole journey into one exhausting day.
Is there an airport on Sumbawa?
Yes — Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin III Airport (SWQ) in Sumbawa Besar, with domestic connections to Lombok, Bali, and Surabaya.
Do tours include hotel pickup?
Tours starting in Sumbawa Besar include early-morning hotel pickup, around 2:00 AM. Open trips meet at Labuan Jambu harbour around 3:30–4:00 AM, and packages that start from Lombok include the transfers.
