The Full-Moon Rule — and Why It No Longer Applies
Ask anyone who researched Saleh Bay a few years ago and they’ll warn you about the moon. The old logic was sound: bagan fishing attracts baitfish with bright lamps, and under a full moon the lamps lose that competition — so for about five nights each cycle the fleet stayed ashore, no nets came up at dawn, and whale shark trips paused with them. That rule has quietly expired. As whale shark tourism grew, hosting visitors became meaningful income for the bagan crews — worthwhile enough that they now go out even on bright nights, thin catch and all. These days the fleet works essentially every day of the season, and you no longer need to plan your dates around the lunar calendar. It’s also a telling example of how tourism keeps reshaping this fishery, for better and for worse.
What January–March Is Really Like
We won’t dress it up: the rainy months bring rough, unpredictable seas and reduced bagan activity. Trips still run — and guests still meet whale sharks — but we confirm each departure 48 hours ahead based on real conditions rather than pretending the calendar doesn’t exist. Picking Your Month
Want the calmest possible water for photos? July–September — accept that it’s peak season and lock dates early. One honest caveat: August–September is also when jellyfish most often drift in — see the wetsuit note in our packing guide. Want the same excellent odds with easier availability? April–June or October–November. Traveling in December? Odds are still good, just less predictable. And whichever month you choose, dawn is non-negotiable: the whale sharks feed when the nets come up around 6:00 AM, which is why every tour starts before sunrise.
