Pergasingan Hill: The Mini Rinjani of Sembalun

Bukit Pergasingan (Pergasingan Hill) is one of those places you shouldn’t skip on a trip to Lombok, and can be considered as a separate hiking option after checking its own trail access and weather conditions. It sits in Sembalun Village, East Lombok, and it rewards you with wide-open scenery and a hike you won’t forget. At roughly 1,700 metres above sea level, Pergasingan Hill has earned the nickname “Mini Rinjani” because the panorama from the top feels so much like the real thing.

Why Choose Pergasingan Hill?

The view from Pergasingan Hill

Mount Rinjani is the icon of Lombok’s outdoors, but for three months of the year (January to March) the mountain is closed to the public. The break gives nature time to recover, and the weather during those months is far from friendly anyway. A Rinjani closure does not mean Pergasingan is automatically open or suitable to hike. Check its current access and weather separately with the local trail manager.

From the summit of Pergasingan Hill you look straight down over Sembalun Village, with the bulk of Mount Rinjani rising behind it. The climb takes around 3 hours and it is demanding in places, but the scenery along the way and at the top makes every step worth it.

Where the Name Pergasingan Comes From

Gasing, the spinning-top game that gave Bukit Pergasingan its name

The name Bukit Pergasingan comes from the word “gasing”, a traditional spinning top launched with a length of cord. Local stories say that in the old days the well-known figures of Sembalun would gather on top of this hill to hold gasing contests. It was part sport, part test of skill in handling the top.

The Trail Up Pergasingan Hill

The hiking trail to Pergasingan Hill

Don’t underestimate the trail to Pergasingan Hill. In a few sections the slope reaches 65 degrees, which makes the climb genuinely challenging. All of that tiredness pays off the moment you reach the top and the view opens up in front of you.

If you would rather stay overnight, camping on the summit of Pergasingan Hill is a great call. Just make sure you bring a tent and the rest of your camping gear. And bring a camera, because every corner of this walk is worth photographing.
